In Walsall there are over 1,000 people diagnosed with dementia. The prevalence is more than three times this and by 2017, there are expected to be 4,000 people with dementia in Walsall.
In February 2009, the Department of Health published Living Well with Dementia: A National Dementia Strategy. This document had three main themes: raising awareness and understanding; early diagnosis and support and living well with dementia.
The strategy identified 17 objectives for health and social care to achieve in order to improve dementia care. This is a five year strategy. However, the Department of Health have produced an implementation guide which sets out four priorities for early implementation.
They are: good-quality early diagnosis and intervention for all; improved quality of care in general hospitals; living well with dementia in care homes; and reduced use of antipsychotic medication.
This document sets of some of the things NHS Walsall and Walsall Council have done and are going to do in order to achieve the National Dementia Strategy. This isn't the Walsall strategy. The Walsall dementia strategy is in development and will be written once all the consultation is completed. This is an implementation plan for us to work to in the mean time.
