How to Use the Health Atlas

Click on the Data button to open the Data Explorer. The Data Explorer lists indicators and time periods. Click on an indicator and time period to load new data. Click on the notes icon to open a page listing data definitions and sources. The selected indicator is displayed just above the data button.

Click on a Walsall ward to select and shade the ward. The selected ward will also be shaded on the map and bar chart and a line added to the time series chart. To de-select click on the Clear button. Column widths can be adjusted by holding the mouse pointer over the divider between column headers and clicking and dragging. The data table can be sorted into ascending or descending order by clicking on a column header.

Click the filter button to filter by Walsall Local Neighbourhood Partnership (LNP) area. Selecting a LNP area restricts the report to wards within the selected LNP.

The map shows Walsall wards shaded based on their values for the selected indicator. Clicking on a ward will shade it in a contrasting colour and also highlight it in the data table and charts. The map toolbar allows zooming in and out, restore to original size and enlarge or reduce the map window. Clicking and dragging a box onto the map zooms to the area within the box.

Holding the mouse pointer over a legend class highlights wards falling within that class. Clicking on a class shades wards falling into that class in a contrasting colour. The legend button allows an increase or decrease in the number of legend classes and selection of legend type: continuous (each ward is shaded a different shade using a continuous scale); quantile (each legend class contains an approximately equal number of wards); equal interval (intervals between class breaks are equal); natural breaks (wards are assigned to classes based upon their position in the data distribution realtive to other wards, varainces within classes are minimised and variances among classes are maximised). The legend button also allows selection of different legend colours.

The time series chart shows trends in indicator values over time, where available. Moving the mouse pointer over wards in the data table, map or bar chart shows the trend for those wards. Clicking on a ward in the data table, map or bar chart retains that ward on the chart. Holding the mouse pointer over lines or points on the chart displays the ward and value as a tooltip. The chart displays trends for any selected comparison areas (eg England, West Midlands, Walsall) seleted from the comparison areas box.

The bar chart displays varaitions between Walsall wards. Holding the mouse pointer over a bar displays the ward name and value. Clicking on a bar selects the corresponding ward and shades it in a contrasting colour on the bar chart, time series chart, map and data table. The chart displays a line for any selected comparison areas (eg England, West Midlands, Walsall) seleted from the comparison areas box.

The scatter plot displays the relationship between the indicators selected from the two Data Explorers in double map view. A correlation coefficient (Pearson Product Moment), line of best fit and equation for the line are displayed. Holding the mouse pointer over a dot in the scatter plot displays a tooltip with the name and values of the ward it relates to.

Values for England, West Midlands and Walsall are displayed in the comparison areas box. Clicking on a comparison area adds a line for that area to the time series chart and bar chart.

Click on the Print button to print the current view. If you would like to make changes to the appearance of the report before printing click on the Print Preview button.

Click on the Print Preview button to enter Print Preview mode. This mode allows you to define a custom view before printing. A new toolbar will appear and this can be dragged to a new location by clicking the stipple to the left of the toolbar and dragging the mouse. Components (eg the map or data table) can be deleted by clicking the red cross in the top right corner of the component. Components can be moved by clicking the stipple in the top left corner and dragging with the mouse. Components can be resized by clicking the stipple in the bottom right corner and dragging with the mouse. You can interact with text components by moving your mouse pointer over the text until it becomes a hand. You can then move the text by clicking and dragging with the mouse. You can delete the text by moving your mouse pointer above it, clicking the right mouse button and selecting Remove.
Print icon: Click to open the printing dialog of your web browser.
Add text icon: Click to annotate your report before printing. A dialog will open in which you can type text and select the font. Click OK to add the text. To move the text you have added click on it and drag it with the mouse. To edit the text or change the colour move your mouse pointer above it and click the right mouse button.
Add box icon: Click to add a box (or frame) to draw attention to feature(s). Click the tool, then click and drag with the mouse in the report to define the extent of the box. To change the colour of the box or remove it, move your mouse pointer over the box boundary and click the right button.
Add sticky tooltip icon: This tool is used to make the tooltips that appear in the map(s) and chart(s) remain visible even when the mouse pointer is moved away. Click the tool then move your mouse pointer over a feature in the map or chart until a sticky tooltip appears - click to make it stick. To move a sticky tooltip move your mouse pointer over the tooltip, click and drag with the mouse. To remove a sticky tooltip, move your mouse pointer over the tooltip and click the right mouse button.
Clear user text icon: Click to remove all text, boxes or sticky tooltips previously added.
Exit: Click exit Print Preview mode and return to the normal working mode.
