Fun 4 Life to turn weight loss New Year resolutions into reality
Walsall children can turn their New Year’s resolutions of losing weight into reality thanks to Fun 4 Life weight management programme. The 12 week programme is aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 16 who are overweight or obese. The course will take place at various venues throughout Walsall with the first one starting in January 2007. It aims to create fun and interesting ways for children to control their weight.
Paul Jennings, Chief Executive for Walsall Teaching Primary Care Trust (Walsall tPCT) said: “Obesity in young children is a growing concern in Walsall and something Walsall tPCT take very seriously. This is as good a time as any with the New Year approaching for children to take that first step towards changing their lives.”
The programme which, is co-ordinated by Walsall tPCT and delivered by Walsall Council Sport & Leisure Development Services follows on from the pioneering work done in Walsall with the first NHS childhood obesity clinic in January 2004. Fun 4 Life introduces exciting and motivating ways children can control their weight through physical activities such as ultimate frisbee, street dance, football and canoeing. Weekly lifestyle sessions focus on practical ways children can change their own lifestyle, with staff providing positive and friendly advice and information.
Peter Mackreth, a Senior Lecturer in Physical Activity & Obesity from Leeds Metropolitan University, one of the leading research and training groups for childhood obesity says: “Walsall Council and tPCT have undertaken pioneering work to help address the growing concern of childhood obesity, and build on the recognition they received two years ago for being the first local council and tPCT to fund a programme to help overweight children. Through investment in training for council staff and quality programme design, they are taking very seriously the need for services to support children and families in leading a healthier, more active lifestyle.”
Fun 4 Life is now in its third phase and has proven to be a big success with 89% of participants reducing body mass index, 62% reducing body fat percentage and 100% feeling fitter, more confident and able to participate in sport.
