Get fit for a fiver

Over 40s men across Walsall are being offered the chance to get fit for a fiver in a new, price-busting deal from the borough’s leisure and NHS chiefs.

The offer is being targeted at men aged 40 and over who live in specific areas of Walsall where take-up of exercise is low and cases of serious health conditions – including coronary heart disease – are high. The deal – from Walsall Council’s leisure chiefs backed by £100,000 funding from NHS Walsall – will enable men to access the council’s Mint Condition gyms at only £5 per month for an initial three months.  If they attend regularly, they will be offered a further three months’ membership again at only £5 per month. The normal price for a six monthly membership is £29 per month.

Councillor Anthony Harris, cabinet member for leisure and culture said: "This is an amazing deal, thanks to our partner, NHS Walsall. Together, we're working to reduce obesity and encourage men to get fit and active.
"We're delighted to launch this offer. It's surely the best value gym membership you're going to find.

"We recognise that most men over 40 would benefit from being more active for a healthier and longer life. This is the perfect opportunity to make that change."

Susie Gill, Health Weight Programme Manager for NHS Walsall, said:  “This is a great opportunity for local men to get down the gym, get fit and lose weight – without costing an arm and a leg.

“Increasing physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of certain illnesses and long term conditions like coronary heart disease, depression and diabetes.”
