Walsall resident does the Moonwalk
A Walsall resident successfully crossed the finishing line of the 26.2 miles London Moonwalk in 9 ½ hours and says she couldn’t have done it without the help and support she received from NHS Walsall and Walsall Council. Mary Clarke, who raised over £1000 in total, entered the walk after taking part in the Walsall Heath Walks and PACE (Physical Activity for Cardiac Enhancement) programmes run by NHS Walsall and Walsall Council.
Mary said: “I first joined the Walsall Heath Walks in the autumn of 2008. I retired from work and wanted to do some exercise so I joined the Friday morning stroll to build up my confidence.
I really enjoyed it and soon progressed to longer walks across the borough and then joined the gym through the PACE programme. I have gained confidence, met some fabulous friends, lost weight and feel so much fitter. I haven’t done a thing since school and couldn’t have done this without the help and support of the staff from the Health Walks and PACE programme.
I couldn’t wait to put all my training into practise and raise money for a good cause whilst doing something I love. When I finished I was exhilarated. I felt a great sense of achievement not just for myself but for all the money I had raised thanks to people being so generous. “
A range of free programmes including Walsall Walk On, PACE and Time to Change, which are led by qualified staff, are available for Walsall residents just like Mary. If you are interested in joining a programme call the Sports and Leisure Development Services on 01902 605500 and they will arrange an appointment with you to decide which is the best programme for you.
