Regular dental check ups are essential for your health.

As well as checking your teeth a dentist will check the whole of your mouth for signs of infection, mouth conditions or mouth cancer therefore even if you have no teeth you should still visit the dentist.

The gap between dental check ups will depend on how healthy your mouth, teeth and gums are and also your risk of developing further problems. Your dentist will be able to discuss with you when your next dental check-up should be, however, if you have problems with your mouth or teeth before your next appointment just contact your dentist.

To help keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy follow these top tips:

Brush your teeth and gums twice a day especially before bed using fluoride toothpaste

Reduce the amount of sugary food and drinks you have - limit to meal times

If you have a child under seven supervise them when brushing their teeth

If your child is more than 12 months old use trainer cups rather than bottles

Use sugar free medicines

Stop smoking
